Big 5 Announces 2010-2011 Women's Basketball Award Winners

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - After winning the 2010-2011 Big 5 title, the Temple Owls received a number of individual accolades headlining the Big 5 All-Conference teams and award winners. The Owls finished a perfect 4-0 in Big 5 play on the year to take the crown.
Temple junior guard Shea Peddy, who led the Big 5 with 137 assists and 104 steals on the year, was named Player of the Year. Outstanding freshman Alyssa Baron of Penn, who led the Ivy League in scoring, was tabbed as Rookie of the Year. In her third season at the helm, Temple bench boss Tonya Cardoza earned Coach of the Year honors, leading her team to a 24-9 overall record and second round appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Katie Kuester of Saint Joseph’s University won the Sportsmanship Award, and Ashley Gale of LaSalle University was named the Big 5 Most Improved Player.
The Big 5 also commends athletes for their performance in the classroom. The All-Academic team consisted of senior forward Marli Bennett of Temple, senior forward Chelsea Conner of LaSalle, senior center Caroline Nicolson of Penn, sophomore guard Shelby Smith of Saint Joseph’s, and sophomore forward Emily Suhey of Villanova.
The Temple Owls won this year’s Big 5 title after going a perfect 4-0 record in Big 5 play.
